NEWS THEME Comments-

Hey, Scott (and Jeff).

What happened to the old “Doodle-ee-doot-do-doo” news theme? I always liked that one. Was that originally from something in particular?

The 2006 Podcast Awards! Nomination period begins July 1st.

For full details and info, visit http://www.podcastawards.com/

2 other awards: Podcast Peer Awards (http://www.podcastpeers.org/) and Parsec awards (http://www.parsecawards.com/) which is for science fiction

By the way, Scott read a short SciFi story by Paul DiFillipo for Escape Pod.  From Stephen Ely - “Cory Doctorow loved the story and the reading. There’ve been some great comments on the Escape Pod blog already too. (Comments on stories usually peak the following week, so I’d expect more over the next few days.)  Great job to both of you!”

Using YouTube To Discover Tomorrow’s Talent

Although YouTube has only been around since February of 2005, the site, specifically designed to allow users to watch and share videos worldwide through the Web, has made a significant impact. Now the site is being used for another purpose: an industry tool for discovering new talent.

It’s clearly working. NBC’s Carson Daly recently signed 20 year-old Brooke Brodack, known as “Brookers” online, to an overall programming deal after she became one of the most popular videos on YouTube with her video “Crazed Numa Fan!!!!,” viewed over 1.4 million times since October 2005.

Could this pave the way for future TV and movie wannabes? It certainly becomes easier to break into the entertainment business with sites like YouTube, as opposed to trying to get a foot in the door the old fashioned way.”

From Guy Kawasaki’s blog - interview with Kathleen Gasperini - co-founder of Label NetworksQuestion: What is your analysis of the following segments for “young people?”

Scott’s Answer: Duh.  Go where the young people hang out.  In the 80’s it was the mall.  In 2006, it’s YouTube, FaceBook, MySpace, SecondLife, etc.

NOTE: Just saw a thread in PCA/Pickle where Red Bar Radio was attempting to get people to add them as friends in My Space in return for a chance to win a camcorder.

PodTech.net was unresponsive for much of the morning yesterday, as word of “Microsoft Geek Blogger” Robert Scoble’s move to the company made its way from the blogosphere to mainstream media. PodTech has officially announced Scoble’s hiring, revealing that Scoble will be joining the company as Vice President of Media Development.Robert Scoble: So, why hasn’t podcasting taken off more yet? Easy! It’s hard to discover new ones (you gotta listen to them).”You go to Podtech.net or Podshow.com and poke around. You have to download a file before you can listen. In that time you probably got bored and started watching Lost again. Or, even if you download something like “Dawn and Drew” you find out that they aren’t interesting to you, and think all podcasts are sex talk. If you’re over at Podtech you might get lucky and hit one of their great interviews, but a lot of their stuff is commercial and not that interesting.”

Everywhere you look, companies of all types are announcing podcasts. These include retailers, media companies, conference companies, etc…

Do You Hate the Sound of Your Own Voice?

By jason on General Podcasting

Vocal Tract Diagram

Here are a few suggestions from Jason:

1. Relax and remember that you can always do another take

2. Imagine that you are just talking to a close friend

3. Add bed music under your voice

4. Use EQ

5. Smile while you talk

6. Stand up when you record

Atech Flash Technology has introduced a new iPod accessory that may make you wonder if maybe there just aren’t enough iPod accessories already.

iCarta-iPod-Potty.gif

The iCarta is a toilet paper dispenser and iPod player in one. You’ll be relieved to know that the dock comes with two USB ports and also works as a recharger, letting charge your iPod and listen to music while you download.

Unless you’re flush, though, you may want to think twice before taking your iPod to the bathroom.

From the Blog Comments

G’day from OZ

Just started listening to your show. You guys have some great content and I enjoy listening to the show. I was wondering how you recorded your podcast, it sounds like you record it as a “double ender”. If this is the case how do you get the files to whoever edits the show and in what format. We are recording our show using Hot Recorder which gives us less than great results but it is alright and we are getting reasonable quality.

One suggestion though. Playing music in the background all through the show is a bit annoying. Maybe use it in moderation, it might be more effective that way. I feel that I am in a comercial all the time. Take it or leave it.

BTW I listen to the whole show and I don’t mind doing it in 2 sessions so don’t worry about it. If it was over an hour I might but under that is cool with me.

Hey guys, thanks for the attention to AmigoFish. There was a bug in the click counting that was fixed around the time you had 150 or so impressions. If you are really curious, I can go back to the logs and see if there were uncounted clicks prior to that. I can also see you’ve had a few clicks since this was recorded.

As far as the geekiness in the recommendation portion, there are something like 3500 different shows that have been rated by somebody. It’s way beyond only having the nerdy stuff recommended. Some folks are mostly interested in craft stuff, and they get reccs too. I’m looking forward to the point when the user base mainstreams out, too, but I’ve been waiting for things to solidify before I put too much into promotion.

Thanks again.

Of course I listen guys. Would love to meet you as well at the Expo.

One thought about the 123 product - it ain’t for existing Podcasters. I get a lot of people asking for me to explain Podcasting “nice and slow” and this is for them.

Congratulations guys, you correctly pronounced “Schlaflos in München”! But don’t overdo it, I actually liked the Americanized pronounciation, especially yours, Scott

LOTS OF FEEDBACK regarding listening to podcasts on your computer vs. a portable player…

———————-

From Steve Dinn

The reason I listen to podcasts at my computer is simple: I work at a computer. I spend at least 6 hours a day in front of a computer, and I often listen to podcasts instead of music. Being a geek, and seeing as geeks are some of the earliest adopters of new technologies (including podcasting), I’m probably not alone by a long shot.

From Chris of the Amateur Travellers Podcast

I am one of those people who both listens to all the podcast and often listens on the computer while working or playing. Although I also listen to podcasts in the car, I work at home quite a lot and have a short commute for the days I do go into the office.

Doh! Consider getting an iPod or a player that can play bookmarkable ACC files

From Shelly Brisbin

Hey Scott n Jeff,

I’m really surprised to hear that you have run into NO ONE who admits to listening to podcasts on a computer. I do so almost every day. While it’s true that I don’t have a commute, because I work at home, I suspect that my listening patterns would be similar if I did take the bus to work each day.

I think it comes down to whether you are personally able to listen to spoken word content while you work. Lots of people can’t do it, and can’t imagine how anyone could. But I’m happily listening to Podcheck through speakers as I type this.

——————-

From Rene again

I _only_ listen to Podcasts on my PC, because my cheap MP3-Player doesn’t remember the position in the file when I turn it off and that’s really annoying.

From Ed Ovett

Scott;
Have no fear! The era in which you’ve never met a person who listens to all podcasts on their PC has ended! I’m that person!! However, I do in special instances, burn to CD-R and listen in my car but that doesn’t alter the fact that 98.6% of my listening is while working on my PC!

See ya at the Expo!!

Wow… sounds like a bunch of people responded to the listen at your computer comment.

I agree with Steve… work at a computer, listen at a computer. If it wasn’t for winning an iPod shuffle, I’d listen to ALL my podcasts on the computer.

This brings up what I feel is one of the next barriers in podcasting. The “you don’t need an iPod to listen” idea. Let’s face it, while portable MP3 players are gaining popularity, I don’t think you can say that even 25% of the population even owns one. I tend to push “listen at your convience” vs “take it with you” idea when talking about podcasting.

Anyway, can’t wait to meet everyone at the Expo this year!

  2. René Says:

    Great show guys!

The “René gender question”: It’s “he”; actually the female form would be “Renée”. But you were right about that good looking thing ;)

Regarding the My Space/Second Life hype:
It’s obviously pretty big in the US, but over here in Germany, hardly anyone knows about or uses My Space. Same for Second Life. My Space also got a bad reputation here through recent (and probably exaggerated) news reports about pedophiles using it as a platform, so people who didn’t know anything about it before that are more likey to stay away from it - and keep their kids away from it as well.

YouTube and blogging however works the same way as in the US and podcasting will certainly “produce” some stars in the future.

  3. John Says:

On the “how do you listen” question - I listen exclusively on my Creative Muvo TX-FM. I walk to work every day. It’s a 30 minute stroll each way. At work I can’t listen - I’m a 911 dispatcher. I also listen on the mp3 player as I do stuff around the house and outside.

  4. Brad P. from NJ Says:

Awesome show… amazing Ubbi Dubbi intro.

    Sorry, for the salt, dude.

  5. Andy Bilodeau Says:

    Hey Guys,

I’ve just heard the show…I think the dual host format is working well!

I do agree that podcasts are probably not the best medium for breaking, emergency type news, but the kind of things you guys talka about…they’re timeless…;-)

I disagree with the comment that the music disrupts….I think it would be more distracting if it were sporatic…almost like making the music more important than the messgae….As it is now, I find I tune it out, like the crappy music playing in Walmarts…and only really notice when it changes…or when Scott pushes the wrong button and the wrong jingle spouts off…

Any chance of the return of the amazing Scott parody skits in this new format? How about something like this from Jeff…or…even better…a collaborative skit…ooo…the possibilites are mind numbing!

    Awesome show gentlemen!

  6. Andy Bilodeau Says:

oh yeah…I forgot about the news theme choice…

I think both could be effective…maybe the more “newsy” stuff gets the “contemporary” music…and the more fun stuff can have the “Zoom” mubusubic.

    :)
