We’re back!! THANK YOU FOR STAYING SUBSCRIBED! Thanks again to Steve and Sam from the SG show for filling in for the last show! This week, we have an exclusive ‘listen’ to a new iPod commercial from Apple (disclaimer: parody). We have a lot to catch up on. Let’s go…

The Old News:

This is the REALLY OLD NEWS that I felt obligated to cover before getting to the new news…

  • GoogleTalk, like all other talk clients, only talks to other GoogleTalk users. It will text chat with others, but it won’t voice.
  • Drew from Dawn & Drew quit his job to work on podcasting full time.
  • Realtors are podcasting house information
  • The Denver post suckered BestBuy into giving them $30,000. I REALLY need to get on the phone.
  • I was contacted last week by a reporter from our local paper, but he was doing a general piece on podcasting so I didn’t get the LOVE a REAL podcast celebrity like Dan Klass might get.
  • Simon & Schuster is podcasting interviews with book authors
  • The television Show “60 minutes” is podcasting now
In the most recent Andy Rooney podcast, Andy comments on utility poles and wires that are marring America’s natural beauty. The “60 Minutes” commentator has a solution to beautify the nation.
    – what would Andy say about Podcasting?
  • Even Whirlpool, the makers of fine kitchen and washing appliance, has a podcast -
Their’s is unique in that the podcast is not about appliances; instead, its about issues and topics that matter to their core customers – families! The podcast is called “The American Family,” and has topics like Empty Nest,
    Newlywed Parents-to-Be, Stay-at-Home Dad…
  • Chris McIntyre’s Podcast Alley was purchased by Adam Curry and Ron Bloom’s PodShow
  • Everybody’s blog is being bought by some large media company.
  • Dan Klass is releasing a “Podcast CD” November 9th – even has a UPC code. – “The Bitterest Pill – Celebrity Sightings of a Stay-At-Home Dad.”
  • Vital Podcasts and Podcast Shuffle are joining forces and combining their efforts. http://www.podcastshuffle.com and http://www.vitalpodcasts.com

The NEW News:

  • Yahoo Podcasts
  • Joe Hayashi Sr. Director of Product Management interviewed by Podcast411
  • Geoff Ralston, Yahoo!’s chief product officer was interviewed by John Furrier at PodTech.Net
  • New feature from Yahoo! - Podcasts.Yahoo.com - Go register your podcast!
  • Jeez, another place to beg for ratings!? … OK… Rate my cast-
  • IPod Video
  • Correction on my iPod specs in the show: This is from the Apple web site: In 30GB and 60GB* models that hold up to 15,000* songs, full-color album art and up to 25,000 photos*, the new iPod makes the most of your music and more. Yeah, you’ve heard that tune before. Only now, you can watch it, too. With support for up to 150 hours* of video and a 2.5-inch color display, the new iPod lets you take music videos and TV shows on the road.
  • I say that this is THE MOST revolutionary thing since… the iRiver company did the exact save thing 2 years ago. No, really, this new Video iPod is a unique convergence of technology, usability, affordability, and.. usability again. The iRiver company was too focused on the hardware aspect, and they had the absolute WORST marketing campaign. Really, magazine ads of super hot looking men and women in night clubs… watching their stupid little iRiver video devices?
  • Gizmodo video iPod “debut in pictures”
  • MacWorld’s video iPod coverage and stuff
  • ROKR iTunes-enabled phone – 100 songs. Hhmm…. My phone is free, so I get use my free phone and spend my money on a video iPod.
  • As trivial and ineffective as the ad campaign for the ROKR might be, it’s inadequacy pales in comparison to the Dell Ditty!
  • The niche marketing of devices, marketing a lifestyle, selling a statement rather than a function. The iPod will make you hip again and enable you to dance. When you own a Dell Ditty, it tells the world that you’re OK with the fact that you fat and ugly, and hopelessly out of touch with today’s styles… or trends… or common decency. The fact is that there are countless untapped markets that will clamor at the gates of anyone who targets them! Simply re-brand your existing technology, sink some money into an ad campaign, and viola! You have a new product.
  • (The following is total fiction for the sake of comedy.)Ya know, I had a meeting the Product Manager for Apple Portable Media Division last week, and we talked about this very subject. In fact… I shouldn’t do this, since I signed that NDA while I was there. As you know, I do professional voice overs and I was on the Apple campus to do a studio voiceover session for Apples next media campaign, targeting an under-served market segment. I bootlegged a rough cut of the commercial.
  • Download the commercial and play it in your show! (Just tell people that you got it from www.podcheck.com)
    the url is blog.podcheck.com/wp-content/assets/PCW_iPodCracker_Commercial.mp3
(Sorry that I can’t just create a link; When I did that, WordPress automatically included the linked file as an enclosure in the feed, and we didn’t want that!)
  • (You might recognize the “Ol’ Coot” clips from the great 1997 PC game Redneck Rampage. “Ol’ Coot” was voiced by Drew Markham, President and Lead Designer of Xatrix in 1999, who then went on to do even bigger and better things!)
  • Another bonus note: Now with Vivendi Universal Games, Drew Markham is executive producer on one of the Robert Ludlum titles for Vivendi. From a GameSpot article: Markham comes to the game with a background that leans a little more toward action than stealth. As creative director at Grey Matter, he had hands-on responsibilities on that developer’s critically acclaimed 2001 PC title, Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Before that, Markham hung his hat at dev studio Xatrix, a company he cofounded. Redneck Rampage and Kingpin are two of Xatrix’s most notorious titles.
  • On Tuesday, the female-oriented, adult entertainment channel Playgirl TV launched a podcast from their primary website. Playgirl’s sex educator, Jamye Waxman will produce a new “Sex Pod” once a week. It will be distributed from Yahoo’s newly formed podcast network.
  • Marketing 101 – Publicity Stunts disguised as Controversy and Censorship - I call that “Publicicensor Stuntroversiship.” Or “Censorblicity.”

Ya know, I knew there was some reason I couldn’t sleep last night and now I know why. Fresh Podcheck content calling to me from my iPod! Wooohoooo!

Welcome back Scott, you and your show have been sorely missed.

  2. Tony Sager Says:

YESSS!!!! He’s back!!!! I’ve been having withdrawls.

After previewing all the crap that is out there, I was elated to find this new podcast released. Scott, thanks for coming back (and stronger than ever)! Hopefully you’ll get that corporate sponsor to make it possible for you to do Podcheck on a more regular basis. I’ll be crossing my fingers for you. I’m already listening to this podcast for the second time.

Best wishes to you and your family!

P.S. - Are there any voluntary organizations with 12 step programs for people with a podcast listening problem? Just wondering.

  3. Scott Fletcher Says:

Bob and Tony, let me say that “You guys are GREAT!” You write the nicest things, and we love it! You can help our sponsorship efforts by spreading the word and telling your friends about the Podcheck show, posting an ocassional complimentary review at Podcasts.Yahoo.com or Podcast Alley, and staying subscribed!

Thanks again for your well wishes for me and my family, and please stay in touch.
    –Scott
p.s. I don’t know of any 12-step programs, so we’ll just have to take it one day at a time. Stay strong, and remember: you’re doing it for the children.

  4. Don Says:

Scott - Thank goodness you’re back! Really missed the Podcheck review and it’s great to have you back online - The web site looks fab by the way! I was thinking you were a podfader but I knew you’d pull through :-)

We just need to get Area51 back online and I’ll be a happy bunny!

All the best to you and your family.

  5. Tim Says:

YAY! new show…very appropriate subjects covered…!

Coming back? You never went away! I have an iRiver H340, love it, you can record on that one…Gerald is pretty cool; Charles the iPod is going back to it’s owner…sad

iRiver hasn’t got a bigger market share because they CAN’T MARKET FOR SH**. They didn’t even say on their products you could record via external mic…sold so many via word of mouth to the podcast community.

So what do they do? They take all the recording functions out of the latest devices…H340/320 is going or gone out of production, H10 doesn’t record; T30 is useless because you can’t monitor the recording…T10 doesn’t record at all…leaving the old noisy iFP.

AAAARRRGHHHHHHHHHH! What are iRiver doing? Destroying their most vocal market? Gah.

    err, that feels better…

ranting but happy now a new Podcheck is back…

    Tim

    P.S.

I notice you don’t have Radio Clash on your favourites anymore…waaaah! have you forsaken me? :-D

  6. Tim Says:

oh weird it’s back now…wasn’t a few days ago.

    I now look very stooooopid.

    ummm….

  7. Tim Says:

oh I see it’s alternating and randomising the position.

    Such devilysh magick confusels me…:-D

  8. Christoph Says:

    Hey Scott,
great show as always! I enjoy your sense of humor. That iPod Cracker is quite funny (and my sister likes it, too…)
I am glad to hear that your baby is doing better. That must be quite a relief for you. Fortunately my kids weren’t colicy, but I can certainly understand what it’s like when your kid is miserable.
I’m curious about your mention of realtors doing podcasts. I googled around a little bit on that topic but didn’t find anything good. Can you give me some more information on that? It sounds like something I would like to do.
Please keep the Podchecks coming, I always look forward to the next one.

    Regards,
    Christoph

P.s.: the new site looks and feels great!

  9. Scott Fletcher Says:

Christoph, I don’t have much information about the realtors, but I do have this link that inspired my mention of the story - http://www.inman.com/inmannews.aspx?ID=48264. It looks like you have to register to read that story (that sucks!). Hope that helps. Thanks for listening!

  10. Jeff B Says:

    Welcome back, Scott!

It’s been way too long!!! Looking forward to a ‘regular’ schedule.

Like the format of the website.

  11. Jeff B Says:

  12. Random Says:

Woot, listening to the new show as I write this!

Scott, it is my belief your vocabulary has a space in it that can be filled by Webcest. Seriously. I can’t believe I ever got along without the term. I may have to introduce it to listeners on SL this weekend.

Anyway, great having you back. Now can you spare a cup of listeners?

    -R

  13. MesoEd Says:

Sure… come out with a new show the day before my interview with Rob at Podcast411 goes up. You knew that we were pleeding for more Podcheck in the interview. You just got the advanced copy and responded preemptively. You are a crafty one, Mr. Fletcher… :^)

BTW: This episode was one of your best. Good job, Scott!

  14. Christoph Freitag Says:

    Scott,

in my voice mail I forgot to say this:

    * You are absolutely right with your thoughts about the Video iPod. I will get it for Christmas for myself, and do you know how I will convince my wife that it is sensible to spend 330 Euros of the family budget for a toy for dad? Some of our son’s DVDs won’t be played in our DVD player but they work in my Mac Mini. However I can’t connect the Mac Mini to the TV. I have explained to Heike that I can record our son’s DVDs on the Video iPod and connect *that* to the TV set.

    * The new look of your website is super!

    Christoph

  15. Chris Says:

    Hi Scott,
I know this is a month late, but re GoogleTalk, it uses the Jabber protocol which is supported by dozens of clients (Free, Open Source and Commercial) [see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Jabber_clients for list], including Trillian Pro, GAIM, Gizmo, etc. So lots of people could potentially contact you in audio and text.

  16. Scott Fletcher Says:

Chris, thanks for the heads up on the Jabber protocol. I suppose I should have said “it won’t voice chat with other ‘BIG Name’ chat clients like AOL, MSN, Yahoo!, etc.” Thanks for the clarification!
