Vlog Success = Big bandwidth bucks?

(Text post)

While preparing for my upcoming vlog project, I needed to guestimate some bandwidth costs based on length, frequency, subscribers. Being a programmer, I think that a bar napkin is never adequate when you can instead hack together a web page to do the same thing.

Visit http://bandwidth.caraworks.com to give it a spin. Successful vlogs can run into financial trouble in a heartbeat unless they have sponsors ready to go. I don’t care what anyone says about free bandwidth- I have not found a place that will give me 2 TB of bandwidth each month for ‘free.’

A Podcast Christmas Carol - posted

(Text post)

The “A Podcast Christmas Carol” show was edited and posted this morning by the organizers of the production, and information is available at the Podcast Christmas Carol web site.

All in all, I think it accomlished what it set out to do; It’s an example of how a community of ‘amateurs’ and professionals alike can come together across vast geographical distances to produce a creative and fun audio production. Anchored by some exceptional voice talents, and then deep fried in the loving embrace of enthusiastic participants, the piece will be fun for the podcasting community to hear. Again, be sure to check out the cast list!

David Lawrence (who played the part of “Scrooge”) will be playing some/all of the production on his show, and Adam Curry (who played the part of “Marley”)will also be playing it on Christmas Day on Sirius Satellite Radio Channel 103.

Afterthought line I most wish had been in the show:

Be safe, be well, and stay out of trouble.

My Superhero Quiz Results

(Text post)

Yes, I have taken the superhero quiz. I am least like Wonder Woman. I am indeed a mystery, dipped in an amalgum, wrapped in bacon.

I also took the Mensa quick test. I did OK, but not as good as I’ve done with the other IQ tests on the internet [as my math skills suck]. I can fold multi-dimensional space in my head, but I can’t do squares and polynomials to save my life.

A Podcast Christmas Carol Promo

Download mp3

This post’s enclosure is a promo for “A Podcast Christmas Carol.”

I wanted to share this fun dramatic ‘radio play’ piece done by the podcasting community in which I was cast as “The Narrator.” I hope that you don’t mind me inserting this promo for “A Podcast Christmas Carol” in the Podcheck feed unannounced, and I hope that you pardon my bad ‘podcast feed etiquette.’ I figured that you would recognize my voice, and hoped that you would know that the promo came from the Podcheck feed.

When the Podcast Pickle Forums lit up with the “A Podcast Christmas Carol” project, I immediately threw my hat in the ring. The podcast is an entirely volunteer effort featuring some amazing talents - the writing team was top-notch, and David Lawrence absolutely nailed the Scrooge character. In fact, every single contributor (see the cast list) left their unique mark on the project, making this project one of the most collaborative audio productions I’ve ever seen.

As of Wednesday 2005-12-21 10:48 AM, the show hadn’t been posted yet, but there is an RSS feed to which you can subscribe so that you can get the show as soon as it is published.

Here’s the link to the site: http://www.apodcastchristmascarol.org (.com works, too.)

You know that I’ve been a slave to my podcasting hobby since January 2005 and, thanks to you, it has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I’ve met truly incredible people, and I hope to meet many more. Please enjoy the show, and I hope this post finds you well, happy, and peaceful.

Humbled by your friendship,
–Scott

(Note to the blog readers - Major snafus delayed the posting of this show, but it was recorded and intended for publication on 12-08-2005. - mgt.)

Wow… almost a podf***er.

Thanks for the Skype voicemail, Nate & Di!
Thanks to Ron at Griddle Cakes for the intro!
THANK YOU for staying subscribed!

Also, if you’re joining us for the first time after Rob Walsh promised you that I would have commentary on the recent PodShow Quit Your Day Job promotional invites, Welcome! Not much news about it, but some advice.

One of the best uses of the bleeps by Tim from RadioClash.

Our feed only has about 4 or 5 shows in it, but there are another 10 or so in the archive. Stop by www.podcheck.com and click on the monthly archive links on the left side of the web page to access them. We started as a weekly show in May of 2005, and ALL of the past 16 shows are still relevant. How do we do it? We invent and lie about the news before it actually happens. It gives our shows extra couple of months of shelf-life.

Jumping straight to podcasting 11.0
What’s the sitch? - Can I just say that Kim Possible on the Disney channel is the best animated series out there that you can watch with your kids? Geez, and it’s the last season, too. I’ll bet they show up on the Apple iTunes store within the next 18 months.

NEWS Roundup From The Newsroom

  • The term ‘podcast’ has been declared Word of the Year by the New Oxford American Dictionary.
  • It’s hot, right? Must be! Because it seems like every podcast media company is pushing hard to signup podcasters right now.
  • Hints that the plan will be revealed after the first of the year…
  • Quit Your Day Job invites from PodShow delivered 12-6 and 12-7
  • I am telling people that they should get the contract to sign and review it carefully. If they do decide to sign it - see a lawyer first.
  • Mark McCrery from PodTrac will be interviewed on Podcast 411 next week, so be sure to tune into that over at www.podcast411.com
  • Kiptronic interview – July 18th Podcheck Review
  • Survey Results (leaked by an elf at PodTrac) - When it comes to surveys such as this, the more participants the better. I reveal some not-so-shocking statistics about YOU!
  • Some other kinds of things shaking out for talented podcasters include deals with MP3 player companies.
  • Melodio – http://www.melodeo.com/ hoping to be a cross-platform mobile-phone-based iTunes killer.
  • And, individuals striking out on their own. For every PodShow, PodTrac, PodBlaze, Odeo, Melodeo, Podilly-dee-odeo, there will be some companies that just simply “strike out” and don’t make it.
  • November 17th, 2005 - PureCast Media just went belly-up – Right about the same time that The Area51 show went dark. We’ll miss you!
  • The folks at www.iPodverts.com (ad auctions) seems to have discontinued their operations.
  • There is a HUGE market of potential podcasters, especially since:
YAHOO! PODCASTING SERVICE NOW IN INDIA
  • How and When I want it. – or as I am starting to call it – the HAWIWI market.

Who is getting it?

  • David Lawrence gets it. 12-02-2005 – Personal Netcast – A GREAT soliloquy on “Why we listen to shows like Adam Curry’s”
  • Subscribe to David Lawrence’s daily 10-minute personal netcast over at www.thedavidlawrenceshow.com
  • you can also now get his three-hour radio show via podcast via Bitpass Unplugged for around $7 a month, or $60 a year. It’s well worth it if you can listen to three hours a day.
  • Wow, here’s a great example of what we used to call in the radio business, a “knob turner.” - The show’s identity concealed to protect the guilty-but-well-intentioned.
  • Scott Johnson gets it. He’s a quote “amateur” who’s show sounds just as good as any professional show. In fact, I enjoy his show more than I enjoy mine.
  • Scott Johnson’s ExtraLifeRadio show, every Tuesday they do what they call a “panel show” with a bunch of guys to whom I can relate. It’s a GREAT show, and I encourage you to take a listen – at www.ExtraLifeRadio.com – “No time for Romance Dr. Jones!”
  • Lest we forget about the – plain brown wrapper side of new technology….
  • Hoho ho ho ho!!! Santa is podcasting! - Ask him for the Premium Bodcast!
  • Who’s going to watch VideoBlogs? EVERYONE.
  • I just found an RSS videblog client for My MediaCenter PC, and TiVo is getting similar features. (What? TiVo? I thought they were dead? just got a breath of fresh air with the ComCast deal. )
  • Exclusive tivo beta photos
  • Not mentioned in the show… “Monday, servers across the country started seeing traffic in their logs tagged with the agent name of “PSPRssChannel-agent/1.0.0 libhttp/1.0.0″, which apparently is a flavor of Sony’s Media Manager Software for the Playstation Portable. As far as I know, this is just for audio podcasts, but video is just around the corner.”

Coming up on the next show…

(Text post)

You know it’s been too long between shows when folks start calling you a podf***r.

Need a quick fix?
I had the honor of being interviewed at the Expo – on Michael Carrino’s Digital MediaCast Experiment. Bear in mind that it was in a bar, after a few hours embibing with Brother Love, Nate and Di, and a whole bunch of other equally cool people on the hotel patio, after getting off of the plane, after being awake for 36 hours. Have I lowered your expectations enough? Good - you are now ready to listen…

Honestly, there hasn’t been much movement in the podcatastophere since the Expo, but things are starting to bubble to the surface. Here are some items coming up on the next show:

Ho ho ho!

  • “Podsafe For Peace” Christmas song – played on the DSC on 12/2/05 – kind of like a “We are the World” song (Where’s Tony Danza when you need him?)
  • ” Podcasting Christmas Carol” from the Podcast Pickle community
  • Santa is podcasting.

Other podcasting news…

  • A Portable Media Expo wrap-up.
  • We’ll miss you, Area 51!
  • Soccer Girl’s new home at PodShow’s distribution network.
  • Bitpass Unplugged update.
  • PodCheck’s first look at our PodTrac survey statistics.
  • Be sure to fill out our Survey!
  • Horse races are being podcast(ed?)
  • Other podcast voiceover guys: Why you gotta be all hatin’?

Too much spare time?
I’ll also tell you a bit about a new video blogging project that I’m working on. I won’t reveal the whole deal until I have all of the pieces in place and am ready to unleash it upon the world. I will say that it has all of the deep-fried goodness you’ve come to expect from Podcheck Review.

Thank you for staying subscribed! You can rest assured that, when there is stuff to talk about, Podcheck will be on the case. (We don’t just flap our jaws because we like to hear ourselves talk.) We’ll have a new show up in the future…

Your humble and grateful host,
–Scott
