(2006-08-22 — Updated again to troubleshoot the script timeout errors.) Today is a special interview edition of Podcheck Review. We welcome Jason Van Orden, podcaster, podcasting consultant, entrepeneur, husband, all-around nice guy, and author of the new book, “Promoting Your Podcast,” in stores August 28th, 2006. Jason’s podcasts: http://www.podcastingunderground.com/ and http://www.gothamcast.com/ Jason joins us via double-ender from Alaska for 23 minutes of conversation about promoting podcasts and stuff. We only pimp the book a couple of times, so you know that it’s a good read if you’re serious about promoting your show (unlike me). In fact, here’s my quote:
“A must-read for anyone serious about promoting his/her podcast.” - Scott Fletcher
I also hint about my new hobby website: www.BarNapkinWarfareDesigns.com, and mention some other stuff about the next episode of Podcheck Review.
(Updated 2006-08-21 to make shorter, change frmatting. Sorry if this shows up in your newsreader again, but I am troubleshooting a WordPress problem that is causing the admin and posting system to freeze and time out.)
Doin’ the show solo today, letting Jeff enjoy his summer, and giving myself a chance to pace myself in this swealtering heat.
From February 8th, 2006 - Merlin Mann posted a great response on the 43 Folders site regarding the Wired article about podfading, and he unknowingly created Podcheck’s new slogan.
Raising the bar for quality, and way lowering the bar for frequency.
So, we have a new slogan/tagline, and we’re going to use it until we get bored with it. Thanks to Merlin!
(Removed the ‘more’ link for troubleshooting)
I am reveling at smiling at life in our little corner of the world.
…and finally, the word Podfade made it in. Feel free to augment the very short article over at Wikipedia.
Certainly, not important enought to land me a Nobel Prize: http://technology.guardian.co.uk/news/story/0,,1738511,00.html Back in March, Lennart Carleson, an 80-year-old Swedish academic whose work on the complexities of soundwaves has subsequently been used in the electronic components of iPods, won a Nobel prize for his efforts, as well as 500,000 francs? (What is that little curlie-q L symbol, and why aren’t we all using Euros now?)
In the 1960s Carleson showed that any sound, no matter how complicated, can be represented as a series of sine waves. “That translates in the real world as the idea that any sound can be reproduced using the sound of a tuning fork,” said a University of Oxford mathematician, Marcus du Sautoy. “The sound of a lion roaring can be broken down into just simple tuning forks.”
http://www.tekrati.com/research/News.asp?id=7434 The study says that young people between the ages of 18-25 are twice as likely than older people to publish a podcast, but… how old are the hosts of YOUR favorite podcasts? Are the hosts of your favorite podcasts under 25 years old? We must ALWAYS question these statistics and seek out the deeper meaning, beyond simply the “so-and-so ages are more likely” or “less likely” to do something. The full news article is available here: http://www.tekrati.com/research/News.asp?id=7434
Buzzwords created, even if you don’t agree with them.. According to the CBS story, the term “Mobcasting” refers to a podcast created on a mobile device.
Thee aren’t any Mobcasts nominated for the 2006 Podcast Awards. Voting opens July 28th, 2006 and closes August 28th. Todd Cochrane and crew will then very anticlimatically announce the winners weeks before the Podcast Expo, and everyone will *sigh* See my July 30th post for my Miss America rant.
Much more relevant to a ‘community’: In July, The Mep Report, a podcast about emus, beat out 9,000 others to win Podcast Pickles’ “Cast Wars.” http://www.podcastpickle.com/app/cast_wars/
Holy crap - Rob Walsh wrote some glowing words about me and Podcheck Review in his latest book “Secrets of the Podcasting Masters,” Read the sample chapter here
Big milestones for podcasters - Christoph Marquardt reached 150 episodes with Tips from the Top Floor,, Scott Johnson and crew will be at 100 episodes of Extra Life Radio on Saturday, and many other shows are reaching similar milestones. I’ll just be happy if Podcheck makes it to Episode #34.
Podshow… Podshow… Podshow… all you had to do was ask. -I tried out the new Podshow web site, and I must say that it has all of the pizazz of an abacus with none of the pesky hinderences of being particularly innovative or useful to me. Really. It’s main attraction is the fact that it (wait for it)… recommends a handful of ‘approved’ podcasts in a handful of categories, all without considering who I am or to which podcasts I’m already subscribed? Did I miss something? OK, I must have missed something. More about Podshow in a few minutes.
Blubrry, Blubrry, Blubrry - Al you had to do was ask… and I would have given you a couple of spare vowels I had laying around the house (sound of russling through desk drawer…) Again, ditto on the Podhow comments. The Blurbrry website is so advanced that you have no idea how cool it is or how to use it until you log in, because all it seems to do is list… uh… some podcasts. So, I logged in and I was about to sign up for the Blubrry service, but decided to read the Terms of Service. So, they admit that they are not a “podcast directory,” but their slogans at the top of the page display sayings like “The Mack Daddy of podcast sites” and “Cool as a cucumber.” It looks like its built very much for PODCASTERS to pat each other on the ass and sniff each others’ advertising farts, and not at all built for listeners to discover podcasts.
Everyone just stop and listen. If you are not stealing Dav Slusher’s idea for Amigo Fish ad integrating his collaborative filtering idea into your system, you are wasting your time.
Podshow Pro - Press Release here. It’s a cross between podcasts, voicemail, blogs, audio newsletters, and other stuff that I can’t think of. They’ve got some major-league buy-in from AOL:
PodShowPRO is also the Podcasting module within AOL’s new AIM® Pro service, which is available free of charge at http://www.aol.com/aimpro.
I had a much simpler, more centralized version of this idea last year, and couldn’t get anyone excited about it. “Podcasting? What the heck’s podcasting?” - So I’m glad to see someone getting some traction with it.
I have signed up as a member of the Podshow community, and I am considering listing the Podcheck Podcast over there.
Calif., Aug. 3 /PRNewswire/ — Dow Jones VentureWire announced today that PodTech, a social media company dedicated to delivering Fresh Voices(TM), has been selected to be the official podcasting company for two upcoming conferences: HealthCare Innovations 2006 and Consumer Technology Ventures 2006.

I heard Leo over at TWIT say that this last week marked the lowest TV ratings for the major networks… ever.

“How did you get the old-time radio sound for the “Yes, We have no Podcheck” song. You mentioned that you removed the bass and the mid using your EQ, but what else did you do?”
I use Sony ACID Music Studio to mix my audio productions. I can usually achieve any audio effect that I want through a series of EQ and distortion filters, combined with multiple layers/tracks. One of my more memorable uses of Sony ACID Music Studio was my re-enactment of an imaginary 2005 Gnomedex speech.
Got my Redboy Podcast Refridgerator Magnet in the mail a few weeks ago.

A reminder to each of us who have experienced that “hightened focus, oblique serenity, and acute awareness of others” that comes as the result of losing someone close: Be good to yourselves, and be better to strangers.
Just a quick note to say that Scott’s hair is on fire. To make matters worse, Scott’s going on “vacation” and won’t be able to deliver the Podcheck goodness via audio until July 14th. Jeff is also insanely busy and has two options: narrow his scope, or broaden his medications.
As such, Scott threw together a gift, an apology letter of sorts for our hiatus in the form of this audio message. (You’re welcome, Andy!)
Some production notes: The old scratchy version of “Yes, We Have No Bananas” is from The Cylinder Preservation and Digitization Project - Creative Commons License Attribution: “University of California, Santa Barbara Library”
Here is some text from their website describing their mission and copyright information:
On this site you will have the opportunity to find out more about the cylinder format, listen to thousands of musical and spoken selections from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and discover a little-known era of recorded sound.
I searched for “Bananas” and came up with two hits, one of which served as the music for today’s audio production. The singing and voices are just Scott with a TON of equalization to remove the bass and midrange. I produced it entirely in Sony ACID Music Studio. I know. It’s truly remarkable.
Please enjoy your Fourth of July holiday, be safe, and be well.

Scott reveals the $20 million secret to podcast social networks, and we discover what was old is new again with those untrusting kids. All that and a slew of comments from the Blog… after… the… jump!
Welcome back! In this ‘part 2′ of the previous show, we talk about YouTube, Yahoo Video, smiling when you talk, the Expo, not going to the Expo, who’s going to the Expo, and poking a stick at Paul Colligan. Also, Dave Shepherd goes all der wienerschnitzel on our butts as he corrects our misguided and unwelcome mispronunciations of German Podcast angel Annik Rubens’”Schlaflos en munchen” podcast. Furthermore, Joel Ross corrects our Windows Media Player playback speed misconception. Addtionally, we know some things. Lastly, Scott whores himself and suggests that you buy some useless Podcheck crap at Cafe Press.
It’s the mundane news, jazzed up with some music beds, and spritzed with just a hint of lemon. Its another Podcheck Review!
The secret of life in essay form after the jump… (more…)
In today’s show, is that an iPod in your shoe, lots of Podcast Expo news, spying on other podcast subscriber numbers with Feedburner, and Scott takes a few minutes to correct some of the factual errors that he made in the last show! We TRIED to keep it to w0 minutes, but… we… just… couldn’t… do it!
(Recorded Thursday, June 1st, 2006, but delayed due to lame, mundane technical gaffs.)
Time for another Podcheck Review v3.0 and it’s a long one, weighing in at around 45 minutes. Today, we tell you about a Skype security vulnerability, dis’ Windows MediaPlayer 11, and give away the MP3 player.
(Updated 5/24/2006 8:31am - added a couple of links to the shownotes)
Also, BIG apologies for the crunchy audio on my (Scott’s) side. I was monitoring the wrong patch, so I overdrove my side of the double-ender recording. That’s the trouble of not having a dedicated setup, and not having the attention to detail necessary to reproduce all of the settings required. I am a slacker unworthy of your devotion!
Who the hell is that introducing the show? Why, It’s Jeff announcing the show number and episode date. Read THIS POST for information about Jeff, why he’ll rock, etc… woot.
…followed immediately by an intro from Tom of the FogView Podcast! Thank you!
And then, we surprise the heck out of people who had not yet read the Podcheck Blog. We surprise them by introducing Jeff Oestreich (pronounced “A-Strike,” not “Ostrich”)
It’s a helluva a show, with 11-month old Sophia making a guest appearance towards the end. It’s an awfully damn good show for being the first Podcheck v3.0. Read “New Episode #25 is Imminent ” for technical details on the production. ALL of the show notes in their excruciating detail after the jump….
(Updated 3/27/06 9:42am to fix Comments posting bug) Longer show today at around 30 minutes, though we share the joy of a head cold! Warning! Dangerously scattered and incomplete show notes ahead!
Random also said “I wonder who actually remembers Marlin Perkins. :)” - Now, let’s see how Jim is doing with the wild alligator. Sure looks like he has his hands full!”

Podcheck version 2.0 - LIVE AGAIN, baby! Another 10-minute test run with the trial version of CastBlaster.
The site will go up and down over the next few days (the week of March 7th, 2005) as I upgrade WordPress to the latest version, v2.1. I need the WYSIWYG editor, and some other features. It’s all part of streamlining the Podcheck process!
CORRECTION! It was Charles Hodgson of Podictionary that did the “podfader” audio clip. It was totally my mistake. The audio file that *someone* sent me was labelled “WordNerds” and, in the midst of my battle with the live show, I completely missed the fact that it was Charles’ voice talking! My humblest apologies!

Listener e-mail
Voicemail From Mark Kelso on December 12th, whom I met at the Podcast Expo. – It’s a long one, but reflects some of the thoughts that we podcasters will be going through this year. Suggests that he would pay $.50 per episode if there wasn’t any advertising in it. “There’s a lot of crap, but your is good. Thanks for not dressing it up. Sign me up.”
Interesting, and at 12 episodes a year, it would cost you a grand total of $6 a year, and Podcheck would earn $350 per episode if all 700 official subscribers actually stuck around. I could do a Bitpass Unplugged account. (Details on Bitpass Unplugged in PDF format HERE) Since my focus this year will be on things that make money, and less on the stuff that doesn’t, what would YOU do? Would you pay 50 cents per episode? Would you pay $12 a year to listen to the show for two 20-minute episodes a month?
I have my own predictions on what might happen, but if it meant hearing more shows from the Podcheck Palace, would you be interested in paying? Even if there was also advertising in the show? I’m really more curious than anything. I’ll read responses and play mp3 feedback on the next show.

I wanted to share this fun dramatic ‘radio play’ piece done by the podcasting community in which I was cast as “The Narrator.” I hope that you don’t mind me inserting this promo for “A Podcast Christmas Carol” in the Podcheck feed unannounced, and I hope that you pardon my bad ‘podcast feed etiquette.’ I figured that you would recognize my voice, and hoped that you would know that the promo came from the Podcheck feed.
When the Podcast Pickle Forums lit up with the “A Podcast Christmas Carol” project, I immediately threw my hat in the ring. The podcast is an entirely volunteer effort featuring some amazing talents - the writing team was top-notch, and David Lawrence absolutely nailed the Scrooge character. In fact, every single contributor (see the cast list) left their unique mark on the project, making this project one of the most collaborative audio productions I’ve ever seen.
As of Wednesday 2005-12-21 10:48 AM, the show hadn’t been posted yet, but there is an RSS feed to which you can subscribe so that you can get the show as soon as it is published.
You know that I’ve been a slave to my podcasting hobby since January 2005 and, thanks to you, it has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Our feed only has about 4 or 5 shows in it, but there are another 10 or so in the archive. Stop by www.podcheck.com and click on the monthly archive links on the left side of the web page to access them. We started as a weekly show in May of 2005, and ALL of the past 16 shows are still relevant. How do we do it? We invent and lie about the news before it actually happens. It gives our shows extra couple of months of shelf-life.

We’re back!! THANK YOU FOR STAYING SUBSCRIBED! Thanks again to Steve and Sam from the SG show for filling in for the last show! This week, we have an exclusive ‘listen’ to a new iPod commercial from Apple (disclaimer: parody). We have a lot to catch up on. Let’s go…
The Old News:
This is the REALLY OLD NEWS that I felt obligated to cover before getting to the new news…
GoogleTalk, like all other talk clients, only talks to other GoogleTalk users. It will text chat with others, but it won’t voice.
Drew from Dawn & Drew quit his job to work on podcasting full time.
The Fletcher household is still a wreck, but Sam and Steve from the SG Show (http://sgshow.blogspot.com) have a very special surprise for us!
Here at the palatial Caraworks Studios, the 2-month old baby’s colic is starting to subside, after eliminating dairy products from mom’s diet and administering Zantac to the baby four times a day. A side effect of this endless misery is the nearly total lack of awareness of the world around us. As a result, the Podcheck dry spell continues for a third straight week. As much as I’d LOVE to comment on the Denver Post’s new $30,000 advertising deal with Best Buy, I just can’t today. Even worse, the hype machine spins up again over at the International Nanocasting and Storm Door Repair Alliance, and it garners nary a mention!
Meanwhile, people continue to buy iPods and iRivers, people still produce podcasts, and people still continue to be disappointed by The Fox Casts of The Family Guy and The Simpsons.
Regarding our baby-crying problem, an e-mail from Bill Mackiewicz suggested that all we had to say in our show was simply - “Colic, ” Bill went on to say “and I’m sure a bunch of us reading it would have slapped our heads and said, “ohhh……” collectively, and that would have been that.”
Special thanks to EVERYONE who sent e-mails of support. We appreciate it! We also appreciate the tremendous effort set forth by Sam and Steve from the SG Show when they made a ‘tribute’ version of the Podcheck. Please enjoy the following presentation by Sam, from the SG Show.
Please feel free to send feedback to this week’s guest host, Sam, at sgshow_@_gmail_.com (Remove the _underscores_) Otherwise, we welcome your e-mail at show@podcheck.com or you can call our voicemail line at (206) gag-ipod.
